The Commissioner General of Prisons
As per 2019, there were 92 correctional institutions in Kenya which entail 89 prisons, two borstals; and one youth training centre. The present prisoners’ population stands at 54,000 of which 48% are pre-trial detainees while the rest are already sentenced. The Kenya Prisons Service workers currently stand at approximately 22,000 composed of uniformed officers and auxiliary staff workers. This is according to the Ministry of Interior & Coordination of National Government.

1. You must be a citizen of Kenya.
2. You must have a Kenyan Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE)with a minimum grade of D+ and above or equivalent qualification from a recognised institution.
3. You must be between the age range of 18 – 28 years.
4. You must be physically fit.
5. Heights- 5 feet 4 inches tall for men and 5 feet 2 inches tall for women.
6. You must have excellent hearing and clear vision.
7. You must have no past or current criminal record.
8. Female applicants must not be pregnant at the time of recruitment and during training.

Upon being considered, shortlisted candidates undertake an intensive Government sponsored paramilitary initial training course (professional) lasting not less than nine months. Additionally, while conducting the vigorous training, recruits will be expected to undertake a self-sponsored certificate or diploma course in security and correctional Science offered by Kenyatta University at a cost to be determined by the university.
